As parents who sent our children to public elementary/middle schools, it has been wonderful to see them excel in a safe and nurturing environment where they are thriving academically, spiritually and emotionally. The faculty, staff and administration are accessible and engaged in the success of their students. We often heard that Fenwick's academic rigor would well-prepare our children for college - so true! After our son's freshman year at UIUC, he reflected on the fact that college was an "easy" transition (credit to FHS preparation) and he watched many of his peers struggle academically. Students are encouraged to advocate for themselves. There are a wide variety of sports, clubs, and activities and the expressive arts department is top-notch . there's something for everyone! Giving back to the community through student volunteer hours is a fulfilling experience. The parent groups are a key component to what makes the FHS community great. Go Friars!
I am a parent of two Friars (Class '24 and Class '26). We have been thrilled with our experience at Fenwick! Our kids have been challenged academically; have earned varsity letters in multiple sports; have participated in numerous clubs; have competed at the state level in math and STEM; have had the opportunity to build and develop their leadership skills. Our oldest was accepted to numerous competitive college programs, most with significant merit money, and is currently attending the United States Navel Academy. Our Class '26 is pursuing numerous advanced courses and is looking to apply to several highly selective universities, most likely to study Engineering.
Fenwick has prepared our children to succeed in an ever-changing, dynamic world. They are prepared not only on the academic front, but also as leaders who care about their community and their world. The strength of Fenwick is in its active and involved community of teachers, administrators, parents and alumni.
My overall Fenwick experience is not one I would change as I feel very prepared heading off to college this fall. However, I would say that success in Fenwick’s most rigorous courses is significantly connected to the quality of the teacher. I’ve had trouble maintaining my grades in a couple classes during my four years, not because I didn’t understand the material but because my teachers weren’t approachable for help. However, I do feel that the majority of teachers are very willing to help you learn outside of class when needed, and will work with you to make sure you’re not lost. I made some of the best connections with students and teachers during my time at Fenwick and I do believe I will always have those connections as Fenwick’s community is very strong and active whether you’re a student, parent, or alumn.
