- You hold a doctoral degree from an accredited college/university (you do not need a DPD verification statement in this case). Depending on your educational background, you might need to take additional coursework before starting the ISPP.
How Long is a Dietetic Internship?
All internship options – traditional, CP and ISPP – will run from eight to 24 months and can be taken on a full- or part-time basis. There are traditional, online and distance options available for completing all three types of experience options.
DI’s Emphasis
You can choose a DI based upon your interests and career aspirations, matching them to the DI’s emphasis. Examples of emphases in some DI programs include, but are not limited to:
- Medical nutrition therapy
- Clinical nutrition
- Research
- Pediatric nutrition
- Geriatric nutrition
- Community nutrition
- Communication
- Leadership
- Food systems management
- Public health nutrition education
The following bachelors and Master’s programs offer career-focused instruction delivered by trained nutritionists with experience in the field. Find out more what each individual course of study offers through the locations below.
Sponsored School(s)
American Universitys Online Master of Science in Nutrition Education will prepare you to become an influential leader in nutrition education and advocacy while promoting nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices in your community and beyond.
Finding Placement in a Traditional Dietetic Internship
ACEND-accredited DIs use the Dietetic Internship Centralized Application Services (DICAS), an online application and computerized nationwide matching service, to vet internship candidates and find placements.
On your DICAS application, you’ll list all the DIs you’re interested in applying to. If an internship is available and your qualification beat out the competition, the DICAS system will match you up and reserve your spot.
Competition for Dis is fierce, as most internship programs accept a small pre-determined number of interns each year, which is why the ISPP option has become popular. Factors that will greatly influence your chances of being selected for the DI of your choice include:
- A GPA of 3.0 or above
- Prior experience in dietetics/nutrition (this may be paid or volunteer)
- Getting good recommendations, usually from at least two dietetics professors and one dietetics employer
- Writing an effective and moving personal statement telling the DI program why you want to be a Registered Dietitian and why they should choose you for their program
- Leadership positions in extracurricular activities, highlighting anything related to the field of dietetics
Dietetic Internships With or Without Stipends
Unfortunately, one thing you won’t be doing in your DI is earning a lot of money. You may receive a small stipend for your work, or some reimbursement of tuition.
You will be responsible for paying tuition and fees, including but not limited to housing, transportation, textbooks, insurances, background check, Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics student membership, and medical examinations/drug screening tests.
Ultimately, a DI is not about earning money now, but rather preparing you for a career as an RD where you will reap the monetary benefits later.
A State-by-State Guide to ACEND-Accredited Traditional DIs and Coordinated Programs
The list below includes all ACEND-Accredited DIs and Coordinated Programs. If you’re looking for ISPP opportunities, you’ll need to pursue available work and volunteer opportunities through other channels.
Programs that offer a degree represent a CP, while those that don’t represent a traditional post-degree internship.
